How are those sealers supposed to work without affecting things like
expansion valves, orfice tubes, and piston seals? I once talked a
neighbor out of switching from R-12 to a legal drop-in replacement that
included a non-curing silicone rubber sealant. I told him it would be
better to replace the metal-metal hose connectors on the condenser.

By reacting only with air. That's why they're only effective and
non-damaging when installed in systems that have been completely evacuated
and had a new filter-dryer installed. Otherwise they just make an
expensive mess. And in most cases, as long as you're going to evacuate the
system, you may as well just fix the leak properly.

There is no such thing as a "legal drop-in replacement" refrigerant.
