I have all good bulbs and a good switch at the pedal, but I am not getting
break lights to come on.  I dont have 12 volts at the switch. I have like
0.2 volts. Strange indeed.
Fuses seem ok although I am confused as to which fuse actually is for those
lights but I have no bad ones.  I'm all through my manual on this one.
any ideas are appreciated.

Check the voltage coming from the turn signal switch. If memory
serves me correctly, power comes from the fuse marked stop/turn/tail or
something like that, to the turn signal sw. then to the stop light sw.

At .2v sounds like a bad contact the turn sw. to the stop sw. by the
brake pedal. You can prove this by taking a jumper wire from somewhere
on the fuseblock thats easy to get 12v from and go to hot side of the
brakelight sw. I use paperclips to get on the backside of the
connectors.
If you get brakelights, most likely bad contact at the turnsignal Sw.

  Good luck, Rick

thanks. The switch on the brake pedal has a normally closed switch on it. I
think thats mighty wierd.
(it opens when I press the pedal down, I checked)  there is some little
device with a capacitor on it next to that switch. Sure is a wierd car, but
ya gotta love it.

Had my fill yesterday between this and a fuel leak issue on one tank, so I
bailed for the night.
Will be looking more tonight.

Ok! Ed
Then it sounds like the brake switch activates a relay in the curcuit,
which is open till you press the brake pedal. Still, I don't think it
rules out a problem with the turn signal Sw. though.

Update:
Tracing problem, with the assistance of diagrams, to the "bulb alarm"
circuit.
ugh!

Do the signals work?  How about the emergency flashers?

signals all work, as do the flashers. the flasher switch is a tad funky
though.
Mike Romain - 25 May 2005 15:43 GMT
The power has to go through that switch.  It sure wouldn't be the first
time a bad flasher switch has taken out brake lights....

But then your Jag might be under recall for broken wires in the trunk
wiring harness....  Could maybe be the trouble?  Long shot but hey.

hmmm.
well, I shall check it. The flasher  switch isn't really in the best of
shape nor was my tank changeover switch.
.
thanks.

Not all lights flash.  They will work without the flash on, but not on
flash.
Like one left side light works normal, but not on flash, and right one is
fine.
so, I'll have a nice weekend to play.

Ok, there are likely 2 separate circuits.

On a lot of older vehicles I have messed with, the running lights use a
wiring harness ground and the brake and signals use a body ground.  If
the bolts that hold the rear fixtures on have rusted, they will not
conduct anymore.

You might want to run a booster cable from the battery negative to the
light fixture and see if that allows it to work.

Good luck.

Well, a big part of fixing this was to find the correct switch.
Apparently I have been working with the cruise-control cutoff switch all
along. Seeing postings about cruise control on anothyer vehicle made me
think. Since my cruise control has never worked since I had the car I forgot
it even had it!

All I needed to do was make a slight adjustment to the actual brake switch
and problem is solved.
so there you have it.....

thanks for the replies!!!
