I was wondering if a car can run if the Catalytic Converter is bad,
going bad, or is loose? My car started making this noise for no
apparent reason, the car runs great,no vibration of any kind, no
skipping or cutting out.The car runs perfect except it's making a
noise, sounds like a tail pipe or muffler is loose & is hitting
something under the car, somewhere in the area under the driver's side.
When I'm under the hood it sounds like its coming from the motor. It's
all strange to me. I had a auto shop look at it & they thought it was
the fly wheel, but to their surprize it wasn't, so they are now
thinking it's a bent piston rod, but I don't understand how the car
could run so perfect if the piston rod is broken. I have the car back
home now, without the auto shop doing anything else, I have found that
auto shops take advantage of women, because they think that women don't
know anything about cars & tech stuff. Any advice I really could use.
Thanks in advance

Yes the car can run for a while with the cat "rattling", usually the guts
break away in the cat and will rattle, tapping the cat with a mallet when
cold, will make it rattle if it is broken internally, I would assume the
garage would have checked this, assuming the noise is coming from that area.

You are right to be careful, Willow. Some shops will take advantage of
women (and they will take advantage of men too, if they think they can get
away with it).
It could easily be a muffler, tail pipe, or catalytic converter banging
against something.
Certainly, it could be something more serious, but find a dependable shop
and get a second opinion.

No, the shop didn't check the catalytic converter, he was to much sure
of himself, that the sound could not be the catalytic converter as he
had said. He said he wasn't sure, but he thinks it might be a bent
piston rod, I'm not sure of that either, because the car runs perfect,
no cutting out,no skiping, & no vibration of any kind. After the car
warms up the sound seems to calm down. The shop also checked the
starter to make sure that something had not broken off & rattling
around in there. Planning on getting a second opinion. Thanks to
everyone who replied.

I would be suprised if it was a bent rod. Something has to happen to
an engine to bend a rod and that something is usually water in the
cylinder. If that had happened and been bad enough to bend a rod I
would expect you to be having other symptoms.
Please let us know what you find out on the second opinion. You've
got my curiosity up on this one.
