Sounds like the trouble I had with my 1995 Lumina. Had to have Solenoid in
transmission replaced . It causes lock up if transmission in third gear.
Does it start the typical jumping action just before it stalls.

The solenoid is right in the transmission housing. The cover plates have to
be removed from both sides of the transmission after draining the fluid. I
had a local transmission service specialist do the job. It took 2.8 hours
of labour plus parts for a total of 330 dollars Canadian.

I had this problem on an 89 Buick Regal with the 2.8 litre engine. The main
problem
was a defective ECM. Buick knew about it, the warrantying dealership had
not read
the TSB.
Admittedly, a lot of things can cause this sort of behavior.
On another occasion, saw a cracked fuel pump cause failure to restart, but
once
started it ran pretty well.
