96 Mazda 626, 2.5L auto, 112K miles.

The temperature gauge sensor is exploding as soon as it's plugged in.
With a fairly loud crack, and it breaks in half. I thought the first
sensor was bad, got another one, and it did it again. The car was cold
and ran for just a few minutes if that. There is obviously an
electrical problem. Please help.

PS It's not the temperature sensor but the sensor for the temp. gauge.
It's completely dead.

Maybe the gauge is shorted. The gauge is wired in series with the sensor. If the gauge is shorted there will be too high a voltage on the sensor.

I agreed, it sure sounds like a short somewhere in the circuit.

Did the sensor ever work?  What lead up to you needing to change the sensor?
Any wiring work done recently?
