Two most likely causes are a dirty throttle body and AIS motor
(IAC)/passages, and a failing trans output speed sensor. Neither of these
is an expensive fix. If it's the output speed sensor, your speedometer
will usually show inconsistent or improper behavior.
Cleaning the throttle body, AIS motor and passages thoroughly requires
removing the throttle body and removing the AIS motor from it. You will
need new gaskets to reinstall the throttle body without creating new
leaks.
Also inspect the PCV system for cracked hoses, elbows and fittings.

When you say "If it's the output speed sensor, your speedometer
will usually show inconsistent or improper behavior" does that mean a
speedometer that jumps all over the place, or at times will not work,
Where is this sensor located on the transmission. My book doesn't show
where it is.

Generally the latter (at times will not work).

Good indication you're using the wrong book! The info is in the factory
service manual for your specific car.

Also replace the oxygen sensors if that does not work. Mine had the
same symptoms.
