1987 Toyota minivan: the driver's door handle isn't working

I've got a 1987 Toyota minivan (they called them "vans" back then).
Recently the driver's door handle began to only work intermittently.  I am
afraid that it will stop working all together.

What's the problem with it and what can be done about it?

Remove the door panel and investigate: look for loose
or bent linkage and connection points. while you're
in there, lubricate everything that requires it, such
as window and door locking mechanisms.

You need to pull the door panel.

There may be a tool to aid removing the cover panel. Usually only a few
dollars. Check your local auto parts store.

A common fault in this area is rust from water leaking through the
window seals and blocked drain holes in the bottom of the door.

Check all parts and sray with a rust preventative wd40 or similar.

WD-40 is not a rust preventative, a lubricant, a penetrating oil, or
any of a whole host of things that people try to use it for.  It is a
water displacer and to a mild solvent, that's it.
