I have a 93 Buick Regal GS w/ a 3.8 & 4t60e tranny.  I have had a
problem for a while with the car pinging/ knocking when the car is
going up hills(not very steep ones at that).  I believe the tranny is
locked up at the time. Usually going around 40-45 mph.  I have replaced
the EGR thinking that could be the cause, but no change.  Tried higher
octane gas which didn't help either.  I tried one of those cheap code
readers from a local auto parts place and it flashes a code 39.
According to the book, that is a knock sensor problem or tcc clutch
problem.  I am not sure where the knock sensor is located on this
engine or I would just replace it since it isn't that expensive.  I
didn't think it is common for those to fail.  Should I just replace the
sensor or maybe the TCC solenoid? Is it a major ordeal to replace the
solenoid? Or maybe someone has another idea.  Thanks for your help.

You certainly need to resolve your trouble codes first... but you also
could have:
1.) Carbon build-up on the piston heads.
2.) Timing too far advanced.
3.) Engine running too hot.

I have run a can of the top engine cleaner from the GM dealership
through per the service depts. instructions.  Engine seems to be
running around 190-200 deg. F.  I haven't checked the timing though. I
thought that was controlled by the computer and not adjustable? Not
that it couldn't be the problem.  Are the TCC solenoid & knock sensor
typical failure items?  Thanks again!

This condition is usally caused by the egr system, could be blocked passages
so even an operating egr is not doing it's job, if it is the vacuum type try
reaching under neath it to the diaphragm and manually operate the valve, it
should stall, if it is electronic, a bidirectional scanner can operate the
egr, same results it should run rough at idle and almost stall. 39 is a tcc
circuit problem, go after the egr operation and eliminate that as the
problem first.

Shep is right... even though you replaced the EGR valve... the passage
could be blocked. You need to verify the EGR system is functioning
correctly like he explains.
