If you leave your function setting on defrost, the AC will turn on even
if the button is not depressed on many cars, the Malibu is probably one
of them. Do you have the defroster on?

no it's not in the defrost position . All you have to do is push in the
recirculation button and the air comes on

That makes sense. Part of the A/C function is to dehumidify the air.
If you push the recirc button then you aren't going to get any fresh
air and the windows will fog up from moisture you add to the air in
short order.

That's how my Malibus have worked. Recirc turns on compressor but does not
set A/C button light. Also note that the recirculation will not go on when
the control is set to either defrost setting.

We finally received the owners manual today and states in there it will come
on with button pushed.
