I have a 96 beretta v6 3100 that has a knocking noice in the engine and the
tappets are rattling. is this a sign of a cut bearing and how bad is the
oil pan to remove from this thing?

Cut bearing, maybe worn or burnt up, is the engine well maintained ,how many
miles, how is the oil pressure?

Is your oil pressure ok?  Does it knock at all temps?  Does it quiet down as it
warms up?  How long has this been going on, and did it come on gradually or
suddenly.  Was oil level checked and changed regularly?

Maybe some bad gas if it is knocking at all temps and came on suddenly.
Usually bad/worn bearings are accompanied by low oil pressure which you did not
mention.
