Do DMVs care about ABS lights or not? I have a LR disco with the xmas
lights on in the dash.

Not in NYS.

In the province of Nova Scotia they care. The Nova Scotia Government says
the ABS, if equiped, has to work. The air bags, however, do not. :\

Checking with your local DMV is your best bet for a state specific answer.

Your vehicle is screaming out that the brakes have failed.....

If any inspection place passes it like that, the tech deserves to go to
jail before someone gets killed.

Mike - I have BFG MTs too, and I dunno if you know about land rovers
but the abs is seemingly worse than just skidding with thse tires For
example, I can pull away from stop about twice as fast as I can brake,
and that's got to be f*#%ed up.

If it was mine, I would find a way to put the light and the ABS out of
my misery.  I have seen too many ABS equipped vehicles hit trees on
downhills and roll on through intersections, then they pull a couple
fuses or relays and have no issue missing the same tree or coming to a
proper stop.

The body shops must just love that system that lets vehicles calmly roll
on through snowy intersections....

I don't know the legalities of it where you live, but I would be pulling
the bulb out and the relay if I had a vehicle cursed with those type of
brakes.

But if one is used to being able to jam the brakes on and still steer,
then having a non working system can be dangerous.  If you know how to
threshold brake, then no issues.

Actually, your vehicle is screaming out that the ABS have failed..... ,
not your brakes have failed...

The brakes still works as designed, but not the ABS.

Which can be extremely dangerous if the driver relies on ABS to stop,
thinking he still can still steer.  If the driver knows how to drive and
threshold brake, then ABS is total garbage in my opinion.

ABS not working does NOT mean "the brakes have failed" on most vehicles.
I never wanted ABS (optional) on the 93 Eagle, so when the ABS conked
out years ago, I pulled the fuse. The car stops just fine- better than
it did with ABS getting in the way, frankly. Before I did that, however,
I verified that the underlyingbrake system design is a *complete*
system, with proportioning valves and everything, rather than relying on
the ABS to do some of the basic brake functions like proportioning.

SOME early abs designs (Bendix-10 as used on early minivans) will take
out the whole brake system... a stupid design and quickly abandoned.

If you ever saw the meatwhistles that work for Parsons, the outfit
that has the contract for the state run facilities, you wouldn't call
them "techs".

1.  You shouldn't let a car's warning light ever go unchecked; so you
need to refocus on fixing them.

2.  Do you think the People's Republic of New Jersey would pass up a
chance to fail a car?  Didn't New Jersey work a deal to get emmission
credits for every car over 10 years that they 'siezed'?  You might
want to not ever give them a chance to fail.  :D

Tom, I go off-roading, the abs sensors are badly designed, they get
pulled out. LR wants $1000 each time to replace the hub, as its a
complete unit. How does that grab you?

Gives me the impression you are rich.

You don't have to be rich to throw money away.

How does that make me rich? LOL I never said I gave them any money, I
said that's how much they wanted.
