My 92 Mercury Capri wont start, it'll turn, but no ignition. I checked
the spark plugs, the coil, and the fuel lines. I understand it could be
a numbe rof issues, my dad had suggested it could be the ignition
module. where are these, and is is this even the problem? thanks for
taking time to even read this!

You should say what year and engine.
Does it have spark when the starter is turning?

sorry! it's a 1992 - 1.6L 16 valve DOHC. yes there are sparks. i
pulled a plug out and tested it.

If you have spark, then chances are, you are not getting fuel....lets
say you pump the gas pedal while trying to start it up.... do you smell
gas?? When you turn the ignition key to the on position, do you hear a
click or noise like a hum coming from the rear? If not, then chances are
your fuel pump has sh.t the bed.....check the fuel pump to see if this is
the cause...
good luck...

we pulled the hose off the fuel filter and when we pumped the gas while
trying to start it, gas most def came out!
Mike Romain - 29 Nov 2005 14:47 GMT
Ok, so you have spark and you have gas.
Have you checked the air filter out? If it is plugged it can flood out
the engine big time. If this is the case, you might be able to get it
going by holding the gas pedal to the floor with the dirty air filter
out. You might have to remove the plugs and dry them out.
So you have gas in the lines. After trying to start it, I would pull a
spark plug out to see if it is wet with gas. It should be. If it isn't
then something electrical is interfering with the gas getting to the
cylinders.

I will check the air filter out today. it would have to be super dirty!
this is just strange cause it was overnight when this happened. OK
anothe rproblem (that i don't think has to do with this, bu ti might,
you decide) is that for about a month i have had a very slow leak in
the cooling system. All the hoses are old and i have been replacing
them from time to time when they give, but I couldn't find this leak in
a moment, so becuase it was so slow, i just put water in from time to
time. about once a week it needed some. if the cooling mix was mostly
water and the temp got below freezing, could this screw up my car? it's
warmed up since then, so i ruled that out before i came on here.
Because it would have had to thaw by now...what do you all think?
Mike Romain - 30 Nov 2005 15:15 GMT
I have had air filters 'suddenly' block. Usually when something like
the PCV got sticky or an emissions component failed or got overloaded on
a high speed run so a bunch of oil got puked into it.
I have had 'way' too many friends show up with vehicles that wouldn't go
much over idle and were buggers to start and their air filter was just
done in.
Having water in the engine can destroy the vehicle if it freezes up.
The inside heater core will freeze and explode. The waterpump will
seize and maybe break off the impeller or burn off the fan belt,
literally. The rad can freeze and explode. The engine can freeze and
explode or if you are just lucky only the 'frost' plugs will blow out
which can cost about a grand to replace if the motor has to come out
like lots do to fix that.
I would be checking the spark plugs to see if they are wet or maybe
frozen.

It could be many things.... if it doesn't have spark, then you can try
changing out your ignition module.... this is located inside the
distributor. It's not hard to do, you just need to remove the cap and then
the rotor... it lies under the rotor. I would check the coil first though
to make sure you are getting voltage out of the coil.....
If you don't have any gas, then chances are it is your fuel pump. One
way to find this out is listen to see if you hear a click or sound coming
from the rear of the car when you turn the key to the on position. If you
don't hear anything, then your fuel pump sound like it is bad and needs
replacing....if you hear a noise for a brief moment, then it isn't your fuel
pump.
good Luck...

ignition modules can be tested. some parts stores do it for free.
they tend to be expensive to replace. look at www.ncf.ca/~ag384/Cars.htm
for a description of replacing mine.

Do you have an injector pulse while cranking? Sometimes you can put your
finger along side the injector 's while somebody cranks the engine, and
feel it vibrate. You could use a noid lite. If the injector plug has 2
wires, that should be B+ and a switching ground while cranking. There are
several ways to check. Did you check for codes?

yeah i have no idea what you are talking about...! sorry i'm not
terribly learned cars I'm afraid. As far as a wiring diagram, or
knowing if the ingnition/fuel system is Mazda or not, I don't know that
either. I'm sorry, i know you ca't help if you don't know what you are
working with. Is there a way I can check, or is this a lost cause, due
to my knowledge? thanks guys so much!

I just had a question. My info says your engine is made by Mazda. I don't
have a wiring diagram on it. Is your ignition and fuel system the same as
the Mazda 1.6 engine?
