Clutch Question

I have a 1989 Mazda 626 with 251K miles (and going strong). The clutch
is fairly new with only 41K miles on it. Last week the clutch pedal
started losing it's freeplay and now it barely has any left. It's
sometimes hard to get into gear, particularly 1st and 2nd, as I really
have to jam the pedal to the floor to shift. I checked the master
cylinder reservoir and it's full.

Does this sound like a cluthc cable in need of replacement, or could
the master cylider be malfunctioning ?

Thanks for any advice,

Mark.

If the clutch has a master cylinder, it doesn't need a cable.

If your master cylinder's seal is failing, there will be a difference
between pressing the clutch fast and slow.  Try it on the highway.  If you
get slipping when you press the clutch fast but no slipping when you press
it slow (but to the same depth), it's either the master or slave cylinder
seal.  If fast=slow it's some other problem, maybe a worn-out clutch.

I once had a Honda Civic that went through clutches quick (25K) because
there was tranny fluid leaking onto it.
