My 97 Cavalier has had an intermittent braking problem since about a
month after purchase, about 2yrs ago. The first time I had turned a
small curve, in a parking lot, and then pulled into a parking spot, the
minute I braked, the car became a bit jerky, and acted like it was
going to die, and I had no brake power. This prob continued, but was
so infrequent, I just let it go, the engine light never came on, nor
did the abs light. This was in good weather time.
About 3-6months ago, I had an auto mechanic replace some type of sensor
that he had to drop the transmission a bit in order to do so, but I
forget what he called this sensor, but this didnt solve the problem.
And, now it is winter, and after our first heavy snowfall, the car had
this jerky brake problem a lot on snow covered roads. It's scary
because it happens when you are stopping, and its hard to get the car
to stop totally when this occurs.....when this occurs the brake pedal
becomes hard, and one time I had to put the transmission into neutral
to fully stop the car. No warning lights come on, on the dashboard,
nor does the engine stall/die. So, I am told with no warning lights
appearing the car will not throw off a code that can be used to
diagnose the problem. The funny thing is last winter, I didnt notice
this problem, and if it did happen last winter it definetly didnt
happen as much as it happened this winter, thus far.
I have had the front brakes replaced, and maybe the rotors too, not
long after I bought the car, I believe. I have had a tune up done, and
have the oil changed regularly. The car has 109k miles on it and
overall is an excellent vehicle, but this problem is scary, especially
in winter time.
I need some good advice!!!

Is the jerkiness on slippery roads only. You apparently have ABS which
controls the brakes to prevent brake lockup when stopping on slippery roads.
There may be a switch on the dash to disable them. Got an owners manual for
the car and read how to drive with ABS....

No switch on a 1997 Cavalier but there are other ways to disable them if
that is the problem.

Which could be a very bad idea if a Cav uses dynamic proportioning
through the ABS unit. (don't know whether it does or not; but if it
does then disabling the ABS could cause too much pressure to go to the
rear brakes, causing very unstable performance in a panic stop situation.)

But, it could be a very good idea if it doesn't. The fact is that there is not a
switch to disable ABS on a 1997 Cavalier. If the owner wants to disable them
to troubleshoot he has to do it some other way. Or, as suggested, he could read his
owners manual.

Also if he is loosing a lot of braking when they are activated his rear
brakes need servicing.

Okay here it is....
There is no switch to disable the ABS. I dont, at this time, have an owners
manual, nor do I have the talent or skill to do something about the ABS
myself, I would have to have a mechanic do it, which is okay.
The jerkiness doesnt happen on just slippery pavement, but it does happen
more on snow. The jerky noises emanate from the front of the car, almost
like its under the hood someplace on the drivers side, remember I said
almost.
I have been told by a Chevrolet mechanic that if the brakes are hard when
this happens it could be the brake booster that needs replaced, or it could
be some type of vacuum problem, but he also said since it dont throw off a
code, it could be a pain to resolve simply.
