I have a 1998 mazda protege that has real trouble starting the first
engine i had had a blown head gasket so i replaced the engine now the
new engine is doing the same thing it seems that after the vehicle sits
it looses compression but when you can get it to start it runs
awsome????Any ideas??
plainoldmechanic - 10 Jan 2006 00:50 GMT
what makes you think it has lost compression? does it turn over
extremely fast ? when you have this no-start condition have you checked
to see if you have fire or fuel? you should really try the basic things
first, then post a new message with more info. if you are seriously
wanting some tech. help. armed wirh the info you have provided, you
would really be better off calling miss cleo. most of the techs. here
have ESPN,,,,not ESP..........

Why would yo ureplace the engine if it were only a head gasket? Seems
like it would be more cost effective to replace the head gasket......
On the problem at hand... if you've replaced the engine and it is doing
the same thing... chances are the problem isn't in your engine....unless
they just replaced the engine without the carb/fuel injection system,
exhaust system.. etc....

Good Luck..

ok the reason i replaced the engine was that i got a newer one for free
that had only 90000 miles on it i have checked and it does have spark
and it does have fuel and i know it has loss of compression because i
have a compresson gauge. When i put a little oil down the cylindar it
gains compression back and i am told thet it might be loosing
compression due to wash down but i have replaced the whole fuel system
and still the same problem and now my starter caught on fire from
messing around with it so much.

ok... loss of compression would definitely cause starting problems....I
think if you fix your compression loss, you will find it will start much
better... other things tht could cause hard starting would be valve
clearance issues.  Sounds like your rings are shot more than valves if your
compression got better...

good luck..

I suspect you are learning why the engine was "free." You should
replace the headgasket on your old engine and put that back in. The
gasket repair will go quicker with the engine out and now you have
experience with the engine R&R so that will go quicker.

i agrre with mr.bundy.....replace the head gasket on the old motor and
then tear this one down in your spare time. betcha you're gonna find a
lot of wear especially in the rings.

Exactly what I said!!  Not even sure why he just didnt' replace the head
gasket to begin with...free isn't always free... lol

the free engine was out of a running car that just got totaled from the
rearend so i know that it is a working engine it had low miles on it i
think the problem had to do with what was going on with the vehicle
before and i think the compression issue is due to wash down in the
cylindars from too much gas also the fuel pump does not come on when
the key is on only when it is cranking could that be a computer issue?
