You may be thinking of "South Wind" gasoline-powered heaters. South
Wind was a division of Stewart-Warner. They drew a feed from the carb's
fuel bowl.
A gentleman by the name of Bill Cannon is still marketing reproductions
of this heater for use in classic cars.

Yep, those are the ones. My dad had one in an old Ford. A number of
years later he bought a VW beetle. Sorry heater in those old bugs. He
found another South Wind, and installed it. Great results!
