I need to replace the ignition switch in my fathers car. It's a 2001
Chevy Impala. I have a few questions about this repair. I keep getting
conflicting information depending on who I talk to. My questions are:

1. Does this vehicle come standard with the passlock theft deterent system ?

2. If yes, does the system need to be reprogrammed after the ignition switch
is replaced ?

3. Is it possible for me to reprogram the system myself without taking it to
the dealer ?

Thanks for any help you can provide

Yes.

You (or I) need some clarification;
The passlock sensor is part of the ignition lock cylinder.  If
you're only replacing the ignition switch, passlock is a non
issue.
If you're replacing the lock cylinder (and passlock sensor) then
yes, the system needs to re-learn the passlock password.

Password re-learn is accomplished by;  Turn the ignition to start
but do not start the engine (it probably won't anyway), allow the
ignition to return to the run position (don't switch it off),
wait ten minutes, turn ignition off.  Start engine, if engine
does not start, repeat the above steps.

Given the conflicting information, perhaps you should describe
the problem you're trying to solve.

Thanks for the info. I need to replace both the ignition switch and the
lock cylinder.

The lock cylinder is getting sloppy and you need to wiggle the key at times
to get it to turn. The tumblers are getting worn.

The ignition switch  has a bad contact inside causing the blower motor not
to work on a restart. If you turn the ignition switch to the crank position
and release it a few times the blower motor will start workoing again.

I was told the ignition switch was available as an assembly only, the lock
cylinder is part of the switch.

Again, thanks for the help

You're welcome.

Understood.  As serviced by GM, the lock cylinder comes uncoded,
so if the tumblers are worn, you may need to revisit the parts
window for new tumblers.  GM -may- sell a pre keyed lock
cylinder, but AFAIK, they come uncoded.

Yup, sure sounds like a typical GM ignition switch.

Not that I've seen.  Just did a 2003 Malibu (same part number)
yesterday, switch was separate from the lock.

The job itself is pretty easy...

You mean, //GM// needs to replace this broken pile of crap. This is
only a 2001 car!

I just had the switch replaced in my 1998 Honda, under a safety recall.

spray quick-start to intake (after sensors) and see if starts. If starts,
check if getting power to injectors while cranking, Make sure the passlock
relearn crap is complete and accepted by computer, give pcm a few wacks with
a hammer while cranking, if still nothing take pcm apart and smell if
something burnt inside.
