I have a 96 Honda Accord V-6 and it's leaking power steering like a
bastard. I replaced the high pressure line, as well as the pump,
however the leak is coming from the other side of the engine-return
line. I think the rack is going out-anybody know what it costs to
replace the rack and what I should look out for when taking this in to
be looked at. I don't want to get screwed over by someone telling me I
have to replace everything. Granted I am not a mechanic, but I do like
to take care of all the smaller mainetece problems. If anyone has
advice, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I think you're screwed, Bub!

It's a well-known fact that EVERYBODY who works on cars is a thief!!!

Having said that, I think it takes a large amount of chutzpa to come on a
site populated - to a certain extent - by professional automotive people,
and tell them, effectively, "I know you're all thieves, so don't screw
around with me and tell me the truth."

That's sure to get you the right technical info and advice from the
remaining "shade-tree experts" whom have NOT been insulted.

Maybe it means he trusts the diversity of experience and openness that he
finds here, rather than to just rush in and take his car to a garage or
garages
where he has not received a high degree of professionalism in the past ;>)

While your problem could be something other than the rack and pinion unit,
let's take a look at that possibility.

I did a quick check at Napa Online for relative prices of rack and pinion
units
for this car.    They had two options: One costs about $540 and the other
about
$400.   There is a core charge for both.

If you do it yourself, you forego the labor charge.

If you go to a dealership or an independent garage, they will likely charge
you
a 'retail' price for the unit plus a few hours labor for the replacement.  I
do not¨
know how many hours the flat rate manual allows for this, but lets guess
about
three.  In my home town, labor goes at $60 per hour, but in the larger
cities the
dealerships are ooching up to nearer $100 per hour.

It ain't gonna be cheap.

Bet you used non-Honda fluid in there. From what I've seen they leak
primarily because of that.

heres a news flash, not all technicians are crooks. What you need to do
is find a good garage and stick with them. The problem is that people
keep bouncing from place to place to find the cheepest price. Sometimes
it is not all about the cheepest price. What gets me is you hear people
say they want the cheepest brakes, or in your case a rack. I don't know
about you, but I dont want to worry if my car is going to stop because
I put a set of 15.00 brakes on my car. Or if my noname rac is going to
blow out driving down the road. What I am trying to say is you need to
do your homework and find a good technician and stick with them.
