I had an oil leak in my car 92' Grand Prix and had this guy i meant at
an AA meeting fix it.  It was the O-ring deal you probably heard about
since its common... so he removed some of my fuel line to get to it and
when he was done my car never started right again, every morning it
took about 4-5 minutes of turnin over before it'd finally start, then
run fine all day.    I figured maybe he didnt tighten the lines good
when he put them back in, so maybe air was getting in.  I didnt have
any tools nor any money or time to do anything about it soo finally
about 2 months later my car just wouldnt start.... this mechanic my dad
knows put a new starter in, didnt fix it... so he jerrry rigged it and
put this little push button switch under my dash... so you have to push
the button n turn the key to start it...but this doesnt work i always
have to get a jump push the button and start it... i think maybe all
the turning over i was doing to start my car blew out my
alternator...but before i go any further i would like to know if anyone
has any idea's about what the heck to do....or if they heard of
anything like this happening or if it even makes sense.

                                                     Thanks - Steve

do you smell any gas? make sure he plugged the coolant sensor back in.
Cranking the car over won't ruin your alternator. Is your check engine
light on? There are alot of things to check, but start with these.

using a starter a lot will blow it, try 10 seconds, wait 15 seconds, try
again.

it sounds like there is a lose gas line connection, sucking air, not
priming, you should smell a gas odor if there is, or see a leak.

your friendly service station mechanic might help you detect it.

92 GP is a pressurized system.
Suction systems were done away with in the 1980's.

Paul, thanks for the tip, from suck to pressure is about 500 bucks.:--)

moral: have repairs made by certified shops, it pays.

Yeah, it seems that stuff you described with the starter and a pusbutton
wired in??????????????????, is off-the-mark.

Hard to know where to start. The act of turning the engine over for 4-5
minutes will ruin any starter in short order. It also will run down the
battery. You got a new starter. Now you may need a battery in this
14-15 year old vehicle. Then you still have that silly bypass switch
that some incompetent installed. Who knows what he did? Maybe he
bypassed something simple like the neutral safety switch. Things are
there for a purpose. At least I would inquire as to what he bypassed so
you know and might fix it. You could always have someone trace the
wires to the bypass.
It sounds as if some of your friends are not attending the meetings
regularly enough. If they are, they are stopping at the pub on their
way to working on your car. DO NOT LET THEM TEST DRIVE YOUR CAR.
