Biodiesel, Does it void warranty?

Federal and state authorities are giving biodiesel a big push.  Its a blend
of vegetable oil such as soybean oil mixed with regular diesel (mineral)
oil.  B-20 is 20% renewable but some private folks have gone much higher
and substitute fast-food frying oil waste.

Is Biodiesel up to manufacturer's approval as a fuel which will not void
engine warranties?  My understanding is fuel injector pumps and nozzles
might be harmed by bad fuel.  Who is watching out for bad fuel in this new
business model?  What about freezing weather - will this biodiesel pumped
out by bathtub gin operators turn to cheese in your fuel lines to park your
car in-situ until next spring?

One state at least is proposing State vehicles run on biodiesel.  But if it
damages vehicles and or ruins warranties and resale value at eventual
auction, isn't that malfeasance of public tax funds?  I am for impeaching
these pseudoecologists who would waste precious tax dollars for a few extra
votes from the Sierra Club peaceniks.

Nobody cares if Joe Blow wants to burn KFC second hand chicken fat in his
'80 Rabbit, but why do politicians suggest you ruin your $50,000 Mercedes
to save a few gallons of Saudi crude for waste in  their gasoline hogging
Government limos?

If you are referring ot a vehicle still under the MFG warranty contact the
customer service line of that mfg and get a definitive answer.

If you really want an answer to that question then why don't you ask
the people who are going to make a decision on your potential warranty
claim - the car manufacturer.  How in the  world could you expect that
a car forum could answer a technical warranty question like that for a
particular car.

If I was maker I would exclude the car from coverage because of the
real possibility of polluted fuel being introduced to an engine.

I have a similar situation, with a gasoline car.  My state has mandated
20% ethanol in all gasoline in state.  My warrantee specifically states
do not use over 10%. I have asked state rep if state is working with
manufacturers to remove this restriction, and I have yet to get an answer.

Sounds like the state would be liable for any damage incurred.

Don't confuse biodiesel, which passes the same ASTM tests as
petrodiesel as to cetane rating and viscosity, with Straight Vegatble
Oil or Waste Vegatable Oil from restaurants, which is a feedstock for
biodiesel.

Don't confuse the two types of "biodiesel" - that which is produced by
large scale commercial operations and should be reasonably consistent
and "safe", and the hombrew "biodiesel" which is typically produced
under less controlled conditions and with less testing and may or may
not be "safe".

What state is mandating 20% ethanol. I have not heard of anyone mandating
over 10%???    KB

I think he's from Minnesota.  It's a little more complicated
than an immediate mandate for 20% ethanol gasoline though.
There's a timetable, and the 20% ethanol gasoline can be
scrapped if 20% of all motor fuel used is from ethanol (i.e.
the ethanol from E-85, full ethanol, and 10-20% ethanol gas).
They've had a 10% ethanol requirement for a while.  Heck -
they're a corn growing state, so it's gotta be partly political.

Yea I thought so. I hadn`t seen anyone at all mandate over a 10% mix.
Here in Iowa (and I grow corn) we haven`t been that stupid yet. They are
trying someing, unsucessful yet thank goodness, but I am positive that a
choice should always be offered.  I have used 10% for 20 years now but
don`t think it should be stuffed down anyones throught.  KB

Minnesota!  Required by 2012.  We hope to have our new car still in
service then, and warranty would still be good (7 year warranty).
