Replacement Tire Recommendation Wanted

I have a Mazda RX-8 that's not quite two years old and has almost 24k
miles.  One of the original tires has very little tread left so I'm
considering replacing at least two and maybe all four.  (The car has
no spare.)  These are Dunlop SP Sport 8090 225/45R18 91W and Goodyear
has them for $360 each.

I was told that Mazda selected soft tires for better traction.  Since
the car is almost perfectly balanced, I'd prefer to get a harder tire
that'll last longer.  If that's not available in a low profile tire,
is there at least a less expensive alternative to the Dunlops?

Sears has a sale that includes tires and I believe it ends tomorrow.
Would they be likely or unlikely to be able to make a useful
recommendation for a suitable tire that'll last longer than the
original tires?

Highly unlikely! You might do some research here:

Or if it doesn't last any longer, may at least a little less
outrageously priced!

Don,
Thank you for suggesting that I use tirerack to do some research on
tires.  This is a great site.

Based on what I've read, I'm now considering replacing my OEM Dunlop
SP Sport 8090 ($252) with Dunlop Direzza DZ101 ($126).  Both are Ultra
High Performance Summer tires.  Can anyone compare how these  perform
or help me understand the pros and cons of each?

Sears for performance tires is like using house paint on a Ferrari.

I second contacting tirerack.com and discussing tires with them.

Now, if you said you had a 95 Cavalier with 100,000 miles on it and you
wanted the cheapest tires, then Sears might be worth checking into...
