Just tried to start the car ('98 passat) and there's some shuddering in
the engine area + a blinking check engine light.

Just had an oil change yesterday (Jiffylube).

Car is at 100k

Is it safe to drive? What's are some possible reasons for these
symptoms and how expensive might it be to fix it?

Thanks!!

Misfire.

Misfire severe enough to threaten the catalytic convertor.

At the risk of melting down the catlytic convertor.

Misfire -- can have many causes.

Depends on cause.

Sounds like jiffy lube knocked a plug wire loose.

Thanks, Chris & Don.
Will talk to Jiffy Lube and see.

Although - I drove it for about an hour after the oil change and it was
fine. then parked it overnight (for 12+ hrs) and then it started the
shuddering.
