College student age 21 needs better car to go college

Budget is abt 8k. Maybe  a bit more

What brand/model you think in this range?

Must be reliable and get decent gas mileage

I'm thinking used Camry, Corolla, Sentra, Taurus?

Possible? Any others to look for ?

Toyota Camry or Corolla.   Use Edmunds to identify which model years
will fit in your price range.  Se sure to look at maintenance records.

Not Taurus.  Unless college degree includes a course in rebuilding
automatic transaxles.

Agreed

Toyota would probably be a better choice.

It will be difficult to find a reliable car for $8k.
In Houston $8k will buy a 1999 Honda or Toyota with 100k miles.
Yeah, it will go another 100k miles assuming it was well taken care of and you put
about $200 worth of parts into it monthly.

If the OP lives in an area where rust is not an issue, a well
maintained A1 or A2 chassis VW is probably available for less than $1k.
I have owned several over the years, the one I had the longest was an
'84 Scirocco that I bought for $900 with 180K on the clock, I probably
drove it another 60-80K and sold for almost what I paid for it.

Ok...so what if he bumped his budget up to say 10k?

Its all subjective.  What does he want?
I have been doing some serious car shopping lately.
Here in Houston a Honda Accord with 90k miles goes for $15k.
So does an Accura.
$10k will buy a worn out Camry/Corrolla with 90k miles.
(I have not looked seriously at Toyotas because I think they are all ugly.)
$25k will buy a small Lexus or Infiniti G-35 coupe with 50k miles.
A good place to look is here:

For myself, I'll probably get a 04 or 05 Pontiac Grand Am with
less than 20k miles for around $10k.  I'll replace the intake
gasket every two years to stop the engine from self destructing.

If it were me, since I'm not what you'd call trendy or stylish, I'd go
with a mid-90's Camry wagon for reliability and utility. All good
choices except the Taurus. Hondas are just as good as those Toyotas you
mentioned.

There are Accord and Corolla wagons as well. Not common. Seems no one
likes to give them up until they've got many miles. Ebay search under
Honda, Toyota, the word "wagon" to see. Wagons went away with the
popularity of SUV's.
