I am looking at a 92  Buick LeSabre  with 22K miles, allegedly an "old
lady's car"

It was garaged its whole life. What are some things to look for on an
old vehicle
with low miles?
Mike Romain - 02 Jun 2006 20:19 GMT
A gas pedal that looks perfect with no wear.  A brake pedal with no wear
on the bottom right corner.  No heel mark in the carpet under the mat.
If you find any of the above, suspect more than 22K....

Other than that, it could use a fluid change and maybe some new tires
and away you go.  It does happen.  My brother in law's aunt gave him her
67 or 69 I think it was Duster and it only had 30K on it.

The asking price is $3500, is that in the ballpark?

I haven't seen it yet.

Not unless the seller has a gun and a mask.

Agreed

$1500 is more in line.  It is low miles, but it's still a '92 Buick.
That's about like the '94 Caprice I looked at about a year ago.  Only
47k and it looked showroom new, but he wanted $8k and wouldn't budge.
It was only a little more than that a decade ago.

Doesn't make any difference if you have seen it or not.  That is more
than one should have to pay.  $1000-2000 is more like it.

Better yet, do a full checkup.  Check engine compression, etc.

Those cars were really pretty well made, but they are still getting old and
I would not pay much of a premium because the car has low mileage.

It probably has a 3800 V6 engine,  version I, which is one hell of a good
engine
on the whole.

Check the tranny fluid.  If it is red and clean, that could be a good sign
(or not).
If it is dark and stinky, that is not a very good sign.

The power windows on GM's, particularly old ones, tend to get balky.
Sometimes
they go down, but dont want to come back up again.

Air conditioning and heating can be issues.  The Buick HVAC 'computer'
controls
a number of functions that some of us would rather control ourselves, and
can be
expensive to replace.  About $600.    GM AC compressors sometimes start to
leak
around the shaft seal, and lose their Freon 12.  PITA.

Look for rust underneath, in the trunk, etc.  I hate rustbuckets.

It might be a good ride, solid transportation, unless something is hiding.
Look it
over carefully, and dont pay 'too much', whatever that means.

A car that has sat (even in a garage) for a long period of time without
being started once in a while is often times more trouble than it can be
worth.... seals dry up, carbs get clogged, gas goes stale, you get mice
droppings around the engine... which could mean they are eating away at your
electrical wiring....I've got an 84 vehicle with as many miles on it....
after a while, I let the car sit without starting it.... tires had a flat
spot on them....
Best bet is to take it for a drive...see how it runs...inspect under the
hood for any leaks... oil, tranny fluid, master cylinder... etc etc.... even
thought the car might look mint, there might be another story to it... I am
not saying this is the case, but just because an old lady owned it, doesnt'
mean it was well maintained either....

Good Luck.. let us know how you make out..

I had a customer inherit a 92 Buick with 18k miles.  She was ecstatic
and thought she had a treasure.   By 40k miles the car was falling
apart in very respect.  For whatever reason, I have seen this
repeatedly and  tell my customers when they inherit a "grandma" car to
sell it ASAP.

I think that is because Grandmas do no maintenance. They don't see a
need for maintenance. And they never notice anything wrong with the
vehicle, or at least never have it checked out. The seller gets hung up
on the low mileage and demands too much change for the piece. Often,
someone will pay a good premium. You have to be able to set your price
as a buyer and walk away. Sometimes I leave my number with the seller
and they call right back after clearing their heads.

Not all, but some.  My own grandmother has... wait for it... an early
90's Buick :) and she does have it regularly serviced by a garage.  The
sad truth is though that some garages take advantage of older, less
car-knowledgeable people and don't always do what they're paid to.  I
remember years ago when I was a kid, I had some elderly neighbors that
had an old Chrysler that was similarly serviced; they'd asked my dad to
drive them somewhere farther away then they felt comfortable driving by
themselves and when my dad gave the car a quick once-over before the
trip, he found the front tires worn down to the cords.  I believe that
he discreetly recommended a different garage to them after that.  I wish
I lived closer to my grandmother so I could stop in and check up on her
car every now and then to make sure that this isn't happening to her.

It has been my experience that letting a car sit unused for long periods is
very detrimental. Worse yet is a car that is used often but only to go a
mile or two each time. Both of those scenarios cause all sorts of problems
in the drive line. Engines get sludged up and bearings do not stay lubed and
seals dry rot. I would be very leary of and old car with low mileage. They
can be a money pit. If you get it cheap enough to spend money in case things
go wrong then it might be worth it, but  you should have a mechanic check it
out before you spend much for it. Around here that sort of car would sell
for about $1,500.00
