I'm currently restoring my '87 VW Scirocco 16v and just recently acquired an
OE exhaust downpipe ($1200.00 + at a VW dealer), I've cleaned it up and
ready to install however since I still have it off I was considering either
ceramic coating or heat wrapping it prior to install. My question is has
anyone had any experience, tips, recommendations with regards to exhaust
downpipes? Or should I just leave it as is and simply install it? Any
advantages or disadvantages with either process?

I assume that which you are calling a >downpipe<  might be referred to
as a headpipe??

Good grief...why so expensive??

I have used insulating tape wrap to help keep heat out of the engine
compartment,
when that has been an issue.  Not beautiful, but can solve a problem. Might
give
some marginal protection against corrosion.

There are also places that can do high temperature vitreous enamel coatings.

Crap, for that money I could have had someone make up custom head pipes in
stainless steel or better.

I just went through the NAPA Online site, and found a plethora of exhaust
parts for your car, none approaching $1200 (Canadian even).

They are aluminized steel, I think.

Does your VW dealer wear a mask even in the daytime?
