Brakes Squealing When Turning

My '97 Camaro Z28 is making a *LOUD* metallic squeal when turning hard
left. It's *VERY* annoying and when driving with the windows down or the
T-tops off it's unbearable. The thing is that it only happens when I
turn left, and comes from the right rear of the car. I think it's the
brakes, because if I pull the e-brake one notch it almost completely
goes away, and it's quiet if I'm accelerating hard.

I took the wheel off to see if something was loose or whatever, but all
the bolts were tight and the brake pads were in the correct position.
However, the spring that's on the back of the bads, on the other side of
the caliper, was loose on one of the pads. Likewise, the thin H shaped
piece that's between the calipers was loose too, but I doubt that's got
anything to do with it.

Any ideas what more to look for?

Thanks,

Ulf

If the brake pads are not worn down to the limit then consider checking your
wheel bearings.

The pads are fine, I replaced them myself last summer. I don't buy it's
the bearings; wouldn't the noise be present regardless whether I was
coasting or accelerating?

Loose bearing might allow the hub to tilt and cause rubbing during turning
maneuvers.

I had the same problem in my '88 Celebrity.  I don't remember what the fix
was, but somewhere between replacing the (seized) calipers and putting new
pads and rotors on, it went away.  You might try some of that brake disc
quiet paste that goes between the pads and calipers and stops the pads from
vibrating, this helped a fair bit as I recall.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, I'll try that.
