I'm trying to replace my car battery but old battery acid has covered the negative terminal. I have wiped away the excess acid but it has gotten in the ridges of the screw, causing me to have a hard time unscrewing the nut. You can wash it off with fresh water with bicarbonate in it (to neutralize the acid) as you are brushing. They can also sell you a new bolt and nut for the terminal in case the old one is so corroded that you wont wish to re-use it. Be sure to clean the terminals well before installing new battery.. Wear eye protection and don't get any of that acid in your eyes. Make sure you get the polarity right when installing the new battery. I'm not worried about the screw threads because they will clean themselves up when you unscrew the terminal. Wire brush everything before reinstalling. And always remove the negative terminal first and reinstall it last. With security systems and codes to prevent car radio thefts, replacing a car battery can be a lot more complicated. Please see Section 8 in the Car and Deep Cycle Battery FAQ in www.batteryfaq.org for more information on installing car batteries. Vaseline and other petroleum jellies have a low melting point and might not provide much protection with the high underhood heat that is experienced in most cars. A high temperature wheel bearing grease of silicone will work much better. Kindest regards, BiLL...... |
