Has anyone ever had success stopping a head gasket leak by adding an
additive to the oil?

Car has over 230,000 miles - I am looking to do things cheaply but do not
want to harm the car because it runs very well.

No.  Is it leaking into the coolant?

I know of no successes in this regard nor any serious problems. I would
save my money. You probably have more than head gaskets leaking or
something else entirely.
Thank you for not divuldging the vehicle or motor.

Are you sure this isn't just a VALVE COVER leak? Many people confuse valve
cover leaks with head gasket leaks.

I never found or heard of anything that was successful in stopping leaks
such as you describe, although I used a seal-conditioner product once, I
believe made by Gunk, that slowed leakage out of rear crank seal once.
