I wanted to get black and yellow striped tape for the back of my CRV.
Can anyone recommend any cost-effective products of good quality and is
highly reflective - something from personal experience perhaps. They say
this cuts down on rear-end collisions on tractor-trailers. I would
assume this would have the same effect for me as well. My CRV has black
plastic bumpers so I am not worried about the adhesive.

Other than common sense, will this really work, statistics wise?
thanks,
tom

Well if done right I can't hurt, and might actually look nice...

We use this on industrial lifts for the same reasons.

The stuff on trucks, known as "conspicuity tape," comes in various
special purpose colors, but the kind you usually see has alternating
red and silver blocks, or (at some positions) just silver. It
typically comes in long rolls or packaged strips about a foot long, in
a two inch width. Department of Transportation puts minimum
requirements on where it has to be deployed on what sorts of
commercial trucks. You can pick it up at truck stops or some hardware
stores, as well as safety-product houses.
From what I've read, a study indicated that it has made about a 15%
decrease in rear and side collisions with big trucks. I've also put
it in discreet places around my cars, like the jamb side of doors and
the underside of the trunk lid.
The precise thing you want is called "hazard stripe tape" and is
harder to find but available. Here is one source:
http://www.mutualindustries.com/truck/html/barricade.html
Or try whatever industrial safety houses you like.
Note that even the ubiquitously available consumer grade reflector
tape, never mind this industrial stuff, is meant to stick hard and
stay stuck, so this is a job to think through, walk through without
removing the backing, and then do right the first time.
Best of luck,

This might be crazy or too much, but is there more stylish solutions?
Example body paint? Example, a stylish color paint that goes over the
just the bumpers, that are reflective at night? Maybe a paint that is
on the car that makes it glow at night? :)
I just know putting that tape on plastic parts will cause it dry,
crack and peal off and just leave dirty adhesive residue behind.
thanks,
tom

Do a search for '3M.' They will sell you whatever you want.

The really reflective stuff used to go by the tradename of
ScotchLite, has glass like beading on the surface. Would be
surprised if there were not generic equivalents.

While I think about it, Check at Galls, they are a police supplier, and sell
Decal kits, If I recal correctly they had some rolls of Tape, if you get one
that closely resembles your paint it might be hard to see unless it gets lit
up, then it would be reflective.

Reflexite is the company that developed and pattented the reflective
material that uses embossed corner cube reflectors and is more efficient
than the ScotchLite material (and more expensive). Used extensively on
safety vests and traffic cone rings.

Well...no. All the companies that make retroreflective adhesive sheeting
-- 3M, Avery-Dennison and one or another Japanese company are the big 3 --
make *numerous* different grades of material with different technologies
including glass beads in the lower type numbers and corner cubes in the
others; there is no such thing as "the [single] ScotchLite material".
The grades are designated by ASTM category numbers, current types are I
through IX. The characteristics of each type are *different*; I and II are
the oldest and not super great, but categories III through IX are all
different, not necessarily better. It's important to know the parameters
of the task -- angle range of incidence, angle range of view, required
retroreflectivity coefficient -- to pick the right material.

The reflective tape I use is at www.streetglo.net/reflective.tape
They have all colors of reflective tape and they make reflective pinstripe
too. I took some 1/2" tape and put a strip of 1/8" tape down thru the
middle as a cool decorative effect on my car. It looks like factory
installed pinstripe.
Streetglo has all sizes and the tape is brigher than the retroreflectors
on the car. I think you will like it.

I forgot to mention.
You can also go with reflective car graphic kits too. If you want
something more than ordinary tape, try some designs or even decorative
reflective decals. The decals can be seen here:
