Villager Starting Problem

Lately, when starting my 1999 Villager minivan, it turns over
but doesn't start until I lightly tap the gas pedal.  Then it starts
up just fine.  I sometimes smell gas afterwards.  The dealer
says it could be the fuel pump, but they can't accurately
diagnose it until the problem gets worse.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I'm wondering why they say they cant dianoses it.

First, it's a small problem, IMHO, but it could be a precursor to you
being stuck on the side of the road.  Does it always happen, even
after the car has recently ran, or just a cold start.

You whouldn't have anyproblems with them just checking the fuel pump
pressure, but it might cost you a few bucks for peace of mind.

tom,

It doesn't happen all the time...but most of the time.  It's
more likely to happen when the engine is cold, but not
always.

I think next time it's in the shop, I'll have them check the
fuel pump pressure.

If engine temp is a factor in it's 'acting up', make sure you tell
them that.   I had a saturn that wouldn't start, stalled frequently,
but mostly durning hot days.  The temp sensor was 'out of range' and
was messing up the throttle positions somehow.

Good Luck with it.  Wish I had a cut and dry anwers for you.

If I let it crank for 10-sec or more, it always starts without
tapping the gas pedal.  Any idea what this indicatsd?  I
would guess low fuel pressure.
