Hi,

I'm from Serbia And Montenegro, from Europe.

I will go to Texas, USA to attend college for at least 2 years (4 at most).
I would
like to take my car with me (I plan to send it to USA by ship).

I have a few questions about this:
- do I have to pay custom and tax fees (if I do have to pay, then how much?)
for my car as I plan to return it to Serbia when I finish my studies?
- can I drive my car in USA with my current plates (car is registered and
inssured here in Serbia) or do I have to register it again in the USA?

Thanks,
Milan.

Since your English is a hell of a lot better then mine (lol) I suggest
you look on the web for the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles....

OR better yet pick up the phone or use the Web to contact your embassy
in the USA....

My gut feeling is that you will not only have to register the car in
Texas...but also pay registration fees, taxes, etc to Texas..plus
conform to all current emission requirements in Texas...

With the expense of importing a car personally I think you would be
much better off spending that money and buying another car in Texas...
and store or sell you current car...much less expensive and a lot less
frustrating... Dealing with any Department of Motor Vehicles is a
ROYAL pain in the rear..
