1996 Buick Regal Custom. Noticed a thick grease in radiator around the cap.
Anyone know what is causing this. The car runs fine, no overheating
problems. Thanks.

If you didn't own this from brand new, it could have been the previous
owner sealing up a coolant leak with some goopy product.

That's what I would have thought also, but it runs too good for that. It
runs fine, good power, no skipping, etc. In fact just did a 250 mile trip
and had no problems, and it uses no oil between changes. I also noticed it
stuck to the sides of the reservoir, I'm thinking it's from the red
anti-freeze that was put in new.

Wipe it out onto a rag , and see if it evaporates to a powder . I have that
on a saturn , and it is due to the "ginger tablets"( sold by saturn ) that I
added to keep the cooling seals in better shape .

It would appear you have oil entering the cooling system.
Have the proper pressure checks performed, WBMA.

I would think that also, but it uses no oil and runs great. I notice it is
also on the sides of the reservoir, so I'm thinking it may be from the red
type anti-freeze put in when new.

Then I would have the proper pressure checks performed
to rule out an oil leak as the source. Why guess as to the
cause? Guessing could end up costing you far more than doing
some preventive maintenance testing.

I was serious about that " ginger tablet " post . Mine has what could be
mistaken as grease , but when fingered out and put on a clean dry terrycloth
dryes out to a powder . It is the ginger tablets breaking down . They put
them in there new , to condition the seals . Actually , it is more like a
clay mixed with a decent amount of the water in the coolant . If it doesnt
evaporate to a powder when put on a clean dry rag , and is in fact a grease
it is probably other things you dont want to think of , but I would bet from
what you posted , that it is the "ginger" they put in when new , at least I
KNOW saturn does .

Agreed, I know as well that GM uses those tablets in most of there engines,
especially those with aluminum blocks like your Satern.
