Ok, let's talk about the best built, best running, least repair shop
history, Car available today! (ie' no trucks, suvs). Reason, I'm looking
for first New car ever, not a pre-owned one.. in the up to $ 30,000.
range- out the door). I see a few sedans that look nice, both american &
import makes but not sure what's junk and what's not..  Please give your
wisdom on this, and why the car you suggest is "best".  P.S. not crazy
about coupes (2 door) but will have a look if recommended.  Thank You,
sincerely..

From what we see in our business every manufacture today is
building great cars, the only real difference is style and
price.  In my considered opinion the best car of the many brand
we service, domestic and foreign, dollar for dollar available in
the US, is the Mercury Grand Marquis GS.  Fully loaded, leather
the works, full sized six passenger car with a trunk that will
hold their luggage, modern high tech OHC 25 MPG V8, body on frame
construction with a duel five star crash rating, bullet proof
drive train, easily a 500K mile car, extremely low cost
insurance, repair and maintenance costs.  Can be had today for
around 20K or less brand new not 30K.  Nothing else comes close,
certainly no other 20K vehicle not even the CV.  ;)

Mike, I am also considering Mercury Grand Marquis.  I presume it is as
good as you say (others?).  Does it really get such a good mileage for
a big car?

The EPA rating is 25 MPH.  They will actually do better at
sustained highway speeds.

Does the Marquis still have the gas tank location problem that
police departments are upset about?

Not too worry, the Crown Vic/Grand Marquis are some of the safest
vehicles one can buy in that regard.  Safer even then some of the
FWD cars that have tanks UNDER the rear seats.  Current federal
crash standards require that a vehicle must be built to withstand
a 30 MPH hit in the rear without damage to the fuel tank.  The
Crown Vic was built to  withstand a 50 MPH hit in the rear
without damage to the fuel tank.  With the new rear suspension
and the new frame added since 2001 the Crown Vic/Grand Marquis
can now withstand a 70 MPh hit in the rear without damage to the
fuel tank.
