Car Rental Basics Needed

I am 35 years old, and I am about to possibly rent a car, for the 1st time
ever. (Well actually I did have a rental supplied to me 9 years ago when
someone rear-ended me, but that doesn't really count.) I need some basics.

* Do I HAVE to have a credit card? Why should I have to have one? Is there a
huge deposit associated with a rental on top of the actual rental fees? If
so, does this happen regardless of whether you use a credit card or pay with
cash? Can I use one of those pre-paid credit cards?

* I need unlimited miles. I am driving from Tucson, AZ to eastern Texas.
Someone told me that if the vehicle leaves the state rental rates go up
dramatically. Is that so for every company? If so, why?

Basically, I need a way--okay, call me crazy--to rent a car unlimited miles
to go from Tucson, AZ to eastern TX--at a total cost of $250 or so. TOTAL.
(I will drive very little except for there & back, about 5 days apart.) Is
that possible, or are all you guys laughing your collective rear-ends off
right about now?

What are some good companies?

They are all good companies, it is just a matter of the dally
rate. You MUST have a valid credit card and photo
ID to rent a car.  Most rental car companies charge by
the day, unlimited mileage.  There is an additional fee
to drop off the vehicle any place other than were it is picked
up. Usually the only addition charges are for insurance that
covers the first $2,500 damage, regardless of fault.  You should
buy that coverage IF you do not have insurance on a vehicle that
you own.  If you have insurance on another vehicle it will cover
that $2,500.
HINT: Call ahead and order a compact car.  Many of airport sites
often run out of compact cars and will give you a larger car for
the same price.  If they ask if you want a larger car for a few
dollars a day say NO, most likely they do not have the smaller
car.  Nine times out of ten
I end up with a larger car at the compact rate.  I've
even been given luxury cars or specialty cars at times.  If they
actually do have a compact car you can still opt up to a larger
car if you want a larger car.

I do not intend to DROP OFF the car at a different location. It will be
returned to the exact same location. It's just that it will cross the state
line--into NM, then TX--along the way before returning home.

Enterprise, for one, charges $200 a day--yes, $200 a day--if your car passes
the state line. I'm guessing they have a global satellete positing (GPS)
system to detect such things so you can't lie about it.

Do other companies NOT charge a much higher rate if you cross the state
line--even if you return it to the same location you picked it up from--or
is Enterprise's practice pretty much universal?

If that's the case with Enterprise then don't rent from them,
WBMA.  I have never paid anything but the $39 a day rate with
Hertz and I recently drove from Philadelphia through Ohio,
Indiana to Detroit Michigan then over through Ontario to NY and
back to Scranton PA.  The only extra charge was a $50 drop fee at
Scranton because originally
I was going to fly back out of Philadelphia.  If I had known, and
could have pick up a Scranton car in Philadelphia there would not
have been any extra charge

Major,

Yes, I remember when renting a car from Seattle to Vancouver, they were out
of a midsize car I reserved, and they asked if it would be alright if they gave us
a Cadillac for the same price.  That was fine with us.  It sure was a pleasant
ride to Canada.
