I discovered that, when our son was spray-painting one of his model
rockets, he got a fair amount of overspray on our car, which has a
clear-coat finish.

I discovered that "Goof Off" did a good job of getting the paint off the
windows, but I have been reluctant to try it anywhere else. The smell of
"Goof Off" reminds me of lacquer thinner; would it be safe to use it on
the bodywork? (I could try it in an inconspicuous place, but how am I
going to tell if the clear finish is coming off? -- not by color on the
cloth, obviously.)

If it is still relatively fresh you could use turpentine and a
cleaner wax.
