Brake Light Situation

Hello Everyone,

I recently had my annual vehicle inspection on my 1994 Ford Ranger. The
inspectors discovered that all of the lights work properly, with the
exception of my brake lights. When the brakes are applied, the brake
lights do not illuminate. All the fuses were checked, all the lights
were replaced, and still the brake lights do not illuminate. Does anyone
out there have a possible solution.

I'm not that familiar with the Ford Ranger but most Fords have a mechanical
brake light switch mounted at the brake pedal under the dash. You can check
the switch by seeing if current goes in one wire to start with. Then when
the brake pedal is pressed you should get current out the other wire. You
can use a volt meter or a 12 volt test light. Also you should have 12 volts
going into the switch even with the key off.

Most likely that's the problem.

If they have an inspection license:

They should be competent enough to check the brake light switch.

Located on the pedal, where the push rod goes into the master cylinder, or
brake booster. If your vehicle has power brakes?

Bad switch.. It's under the dash and should be touching the brake pedal
lever (depressed) when you're off the brakes.
If you put a meter on it it will tell you if it's working. (low/no
resistance when the pedal is pressed)
