The fan is usually the front of the engine.

Does that mean that the left side is the left as you look at the front of
the engine or from the back?!

Standing behind engine looking forward left is left, right is ...
or alternatively from seated within car left is left ...

The engine is sideways so I said the fan is at the front of the engine
to much confusion it would seem.....
