Screeching Noise - Alternator?

I'm wondering what the screeching noise I hear from under the hood of my
Mazda Protege is.  It is not always there but it is often there when I first
start the car up and it is wet outside.  I also notice it increases in
frequency when I add electrical load to the car (turning on fan,
headlights).  Is this the alternator itself ( bearings going bad) or is the
belt loose or both????  Very confusing.

If you are confused, find a person who isn't, and have your belt
checked.  If that doesn't fix it, then that same person will most
likely start looking at the items supplied by the belt.

Normally that means the belt is loose or polished up so it doesn't grab
any more.

I polish mine all the time because i take my Jeep off road.  Mud is
liquid sandpaper.

I test mine by taking the cold off engine and seeing if I can hand slip
the alternator pulley.  If I can had slip it and the belt appears tight,
it is time for a new belt.

Mike,

Thanks for the advice.  I figured it was the belt but it's pretty hard to
get to the belt on this vehicle.  Unlike my old Ford Ranger where it was
easy to fix the problem, this one is a bit more challenging for an amateur
mechanic.

Oh, and thanks for not being a smart a.s like the previous responders.

I think the goal of auto manufactures is to make the standard
'belt-job' differcult for the average amateur mechanic.  So yes, you
are like most of us, doomed to getting your car to someone and wasting
time, that could have been spent doing the work yourself saving money.

Good luck in your adventures.

I only saw one smart a.s response, wait did you me too!!!!

I'm gunna cry.  :(
