Anyone know exactly what component is failing in the system and causing the
fires?

Is it  relay or coil in the module that shorts out, or another component?
Just curious from an electronics POV.

It's the cruise control deactivation switch.  It's a pressure operated switch that is attached to the master
cylinder and when you brake (putting pressure into the brake system) it breaks the contact in the switch.  The
problem seems to be corrosion inside the switch and the fact that the switch is energized all the time - even
when the ignition is off.
