A friend of mine needs to fix his car but needs to get it in the air. A
while back I rember there were places you could rent by the hour and bring
your car in and fix it. Does anyone know if these still exist. I am looking
in the Los Angeles area.

The lawyers forced them all out of business in all of North America from
past discussions on other forums about it.

Most likely true.... Shop nights at the local dealers are fast
becomming a thing of the past also...

But the original poster may want to check around and find a local car
club ..Many members have lifts .. I have "loaned" my garage with the
lift out a number of times...pretty common practice...

That is very true.  The folks with Jeeps all help each other and share
spaces for clubs and things.
