My 18 year old just got a DWI in NJ. Eventually we will need to get auto
insurance. Do regular insurers cover you or do you have to go with those
high risk state plans? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The odds that you will get anything other than assigned risk is
practically zero. Face it, DWI, underage drinking, and there is
virtually no easy insurance. You could pull his driving license,
remove him as a driver in the household and you might get insurance.
Were this my son, this would be his 'growing up' lesson, and it would
be seriously time to find himself an apartment. (sorry, harsh, but DWI
by an 18 year old isn't like littering.)
I can't imagine what your insurance would be with this driver and his
record, but it will be *very* expensive. In many states you are
talking about $5K a year, or even more. An underage DUI is the biggest
red flag that he could have on his record, the insurance company will
take it that he has a drinking problem, and incredibly poor judgement,
at best.
Good luck, I'd suggest maybe a bicycle for a few years might be most
sensible (but, no motorcycle!) He (and you) are on the road towards a
very expensive lesson in responsibility... Good luck!
(BTW, IIRC for him to drive without insurance is a criminal act in
almost all states--do not let him do that!)

In all likelihood, she'll be placed in the assigned-risk pool and some
insurance company will be force to insure her. You WILL pay dearly
for that privilege for at least three years.

Regular insurers must cover you but they do so at high risk
rates.

Cut the cord, and send the adult out to fend for themselves. 18 is an
adult, treat them as such, and thy might grow up. ;)
Maybe a few months in bootcamp, and a couple years serving their
country will help your '18' year old handle things themselves.
Good luck...
