i have a vs commodore , when i have the headlights on the high beams
flick on by themselves , this usually happens straight after i
indicate and the
(when the indicator turns of the high beams come on ) i have to hold
the indicator/high beam arm back towards myself to prevent them coming
on and blinding on coming traffick. the high beams also come on
sometimes when i go over a bump .

can anyone advise why this is happening and what i need to do to fix
it
maybe a relay or switch problem but i dont know

Sounds like the switch needs to be replaced, or maybe something's come
loose.  Start with the switch.

I would rule out the simplest items, that you can check.  Check the
conditions of the bulbs, are they making good contact.  Start the car,
check for voltages, maybe the highbeams aren't flickering, but dimming
and brighting do to voltage changes.

Check these if you are comfortable with working on a car.

thanks tom i will check the bulbs, i dont think it a vaultage thing
because i can control it by holding the indicator arm back, the high
beams come on once i allow the arm to fall forward back into its
normal position( i think it goes a fraction to far forwardsome times
and this is when the high beams
come on almost always after indicating unless i hold the indicator arm
back and release it forward very slowly
