I have a 55 Chevy wagon that I installed a Mildly Modified 350. My problem
is when I start the car I am embarrassed by all the noise. The starter
noise is awful. I bought a new starter, made no difference. Yes I shimmed
it to specs and then expermented, made no difference. I’m guessing the
only thing left is the ring gear. Although it sure doesn’t look bad or I
don’t know what to look for. Any help sure would be appreciated.

Can you describe the noises?  Any other symptoms while using the starter?
Klunks, thumbs, clicks, bangs?  Grinding noises?  Whining noises?  Can full
of rocks noises?

I guess you could say it’s sort of the normal sound you would hear starting
a car, But Very exaggerated. It’s not gears grinding. Whining noise may
describe some of it. There are no other systems like Klunks, thumbs,
clicks or bangs.

LOL!

They make two starters for the engine, one is a 'normal' direct drive
and the other is a gear reduction unit that goes wing wing wing wing
wing then vrom when the normal one goes arung, arung, then vrom.
