How do I know if the oil is full on my car? About a year ago I bought
a car and last week I was reading on a website that I am supposed to
check the oil. The gage on the dash says "OIL" and it goes from L on
the left to H on the right. I can only guess that the L means LOTS
and the H means HARDLY. I looked at the gage and it is right in the
middle. I am guessing that it needs more oil so it says LOTS. I went
to Walmart and bought four 5 quart jugs. If thats not enough I will
buy more. But how do I know how much will make the gage show "L"? Or
do I just fill it until it's filled to the top? By the way, I was
looking under the dash by that gage and cant find the place to put the
oil. Where does it go?

Top of the engine. FIll it until it reaches the bottom of the oil fill
hole. If it has been a while since you checked, it probalby will take
several gallons, not quarts.
Everything I say is a lie. I'm telling the truth.

On the off chance you are serious, I am bored so I will bite....
The dash gauge is pressure. L for low, H for high. In the middle is a
good thing.
The dipstick to check the oil level is under the hood on the engine and
if you can't find that I recommend a full serve gas station. They will
check the oil for you and you can watch where he finds the stick. The
stick will say full and add. Normally it takes a quart of oil 'only'
when it gets to the add mark. Do not add oil if it is above that mark.
Good luck.....

Just curious. What would happen if someone actually did fill their
engine completely with oil till it was right to the top of the fill
tube? I always wondered that. I'd think that it would not crank
over, but at the same time, we can move under water and oil is a
liquid, so I am not sure...... I know it would spray oil everywhere
and make a real mess. But would the engine run?
Just curious. I'm sure someone has done it in the past..... (most
likely a blond :) )

I think it would depend on trapped air to allow the engine to turn
over. I doubt it would start (too much resistance with the crank
submerged.)
When I was a kid, the lad next door decided to see how much oil he
could put in the lawnmower. The answer was:
1. A lot.
2. It did start.
3. It ran, and smoked so much you could not see anythign else.
And as you mention, one he!! of a mess!
