Recently, I have been noticing that when I am turning sharply at low
speeds, the steering wheel feels like it wants to jump and I hear a
thumping/grinding noise. Sometimes the issue occurs, other times it
doesn't. When I had the power steering fluid changed a month ago, the
fluid was brown. Any relation? I would like to be informed before I
have it serviced. I appreciate your help!
Thanks,
Todd

Neighbor had a very similar problem in his (2003 ?) truck ...turned
out to be in or connected to the steering box...and the 3rd dealer he
took it to KNEW right away what the problem was...as he (the service
manager) had seen the problem a number of times...
... wish I knew exactly what he said the problem was...but replacing a
single joint in the steering box/colum cured the problem...why one
dealer had seen the problem several times yet others were clueless I
have no idea...

Ask about a bad control/sensor for the variable rate power-steering system.
Bad, it causes extra sensitivity & sense of loss of control, esp. rounding
curves at 20-40 mph. Re: grinding/thumping, I've not seen it cause that,
but possible... Costs ~$30 at GM, & installs in a jif. HTH, s
