Hi newsgroup,

I'm looking for information on "oil additive". I think the most known
one is "SLICK 50". Sometimes, one reads bad stories about that. So,
should I use it or not?
Okay, and another thing is: Maybe we could collect names of good
additives here as an overview.
Would be fine.

Okay, please write here.

Greetings,

Since most people can get 150,000-200,000 miles out of a modern engine by
doing the oil changes as recommended with a quality oil, why worry about
"additives" at all?  They are unnecessary, EVEN if they do do something.

I agree, personally i don't like nor use additives, modern lubricants
eliminate the need for them.
People used slick-50, redex etc when their engine started chucking smoke out
the exhaust. hardly an effective repair. all it does it line the bores and
valve guides which in my book is unnecassary if your rings and valve seals
are in good order.

Steve.

The only additive I use in some high mileage/hour "loose" engines is
a "motor honey" like STP as I have seen it quiet engines some and
raise oil pressire 5 to 10 PSI in engines with low oil pressure.

My GA 4 cyl had a slight ticking like a tappet noise. Having never using
additives before, I read all the labels of a dozen or more additives on the
shelf. I chose one called Rislone. The ticking went away as they promised. I
think the gas mileage got better too but it is hart to say for sure because
it varies so much.

You have to be carefull with Rislone in older engines. I saw one
engine toasted with it. What happened it as a used car that someone
bought and they add Rislone to help it run better but engine had
sludge in it and the Rislone cut it loose in short order and plugged
the oil filter and then sent the bypassed gritty oil to engine bearing
and wiped them out in about 100 miles. If the owner had stayed on top
of it and changed the oil and filter early on they might have caught
the problem but they did not.

That sucks. I am surprised that it would remove that much sludge so quickly.
I did keep an eye on the oil condition for a while but saw nothing abnormal.

I'd suspect that if there was that much sludge in the engine that it
was shot anyway! In today's engines, there is no excuse for sludge
except for failing to properly change the oil.

Back in the 50's and 60's engines were usually sludged up at 50K miles
or less. Today, I can tear down an engine with 100K miles and find
virtually no sludge at all (and if I do find it, that is a major
indication that the oil wasn't changed at teh specified intervals.)

There are people (I'm not sure how many, but I meet them) who have
*never* changed the oil in their engine, for perhaps 40 to 50K miles.
They add oil when the oil light flickers, but never change it.
