Obtaining CARFAX information on one's own

Assuming that the CARFAX service gets most of its data from public
sources, it seems to me that any individual should be able to obtain
the exact same information, without having to pay CARFAX for it. Does
anyone know exactly where CARFAX gets all of its info from? TIA.

Sorry, now I remember your original post.

Yes you can do it, but you have to approach various DMVs and get their
*public* records, manufacturers and get their service records, and
insurance companies and get their records. Not easy, especially for a
one up job. CarFax works because they do thousands at one time,
automatically, something that you wont' be able to do.
