Beware of the mechanic review section of cartalk.com:
http://www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/
I thought it was pretty cool when I discovered it, as I needed to find a good
mechanic for my car. I was thrilled to see that there were a few mechanics
near me who got nothing but positive reviews. But now I've learned that they
do NOT post any negative reviews. I've submitted a negative review of a
mechanic twice recently, and they have not posted it. In addition, if you
just browse through some of the reviews, you will notice that ALL of them are
positive. This is a disservice to people looking for a mechanic, because they
will not be able to get the full story. Realize that people are much more
likely to post a review after a negative experience than a positive
experience. So if a mechanic has 10 positive reviews, there are probably 50
people who wanted to write a negative review!
So I just wanted to warn everyone, in case there are people who don't know
that cartalk doesn't post negative reviews. That mechanic you found on their
site may not be as good as everyone is saying!
On that note, does anyone know of a car site that DOES let people post
negative reviews about mechanics?

I discovered their lack of response years ago. Twice I tried to get
them to correct the address of a local shop. They are 100 miles off in
the address they show. The first time I received the perfunctory email
response saying they appreciated my interest...blah blah blah. There
was no response the second time.
Also I notice that they continue to show shops and mechanics that have
long changed hands or gone out of business. I don't blame them for not
being able to keep verifying each listing. However, they should bother
when the information is provided. Same with negative comments. Let the
people decide.
