Have a '91 Mercury that needs to have the air conditioning unit recharged.
This uses R-12 Freon, & I don't want to convert to the newer R-134a. I'm
located in southern Colorado - does anyone know where I can have this done
and/or how I can go about obtaining the refrigerant to do this myself
without spending a lot? I don't need to know about the alternatives, I've
already researched them! Thanks in advance to respondents!!

I would suggest EC12a also called Envirosafe and a few brand names. It
is hydro carbon based and cools better that R12 in a R12 system and it
is fully compatable with R12 oil too. People are down on it because it
is considered a flamable but none is present in system and when it
does burn the by products are harmless unlike R124 which will auto
ignite at 495 degrees and give off a very deady gas when it burns on
it own or in a open flame. EC12a is not EPA approved (and I think it
is more political than anything) but it is not illegal to buy or use
and it break down completely in the environment in less than a year
when released vs R134 16 year plus time and even then it never goes
away 100%

EC12a does work. But, look it up...it is a butane/propane based
material. No problem until your system leaks. Be aware.

The fuel in you car is a far bigger threat than 20oz of hydro carbon
based refridgerant. The danger of using it is greatly over rated
because you have a far greater chance of a fuel leak and ec12 would
disapate rapidly in open air where gas vapors tend to pool if given
the chance too.
