'97 Chevy S-10 Electrical Problem

Hey guys,

I'm hoping you can help me figure out what is wrong with my car. As
aforementioned, it's a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 with the 4-cylinder engine
w/AC and has about 40k miles on it. It's been driven pretty lightly.
This problem only really happens when the car has been sitting around
for a while (e.g. overnight in the garage.) It doesn't happen all the
time.

When I get into the car and try to start the car:
1) It won't start
2) A LOUD, obnoxious, abrasive buzzing sound comes from the area near
the clutch pedal.
3) Radio, ignition, head/tail lights all fail to work
4) When I open the glove compartment (which turns on this small light)
or when I pop the hood (which also turns on this small light) the noise
stops immediately.
5) When I close the glove compartment and the hood the noise starts
again
6) When I close the door the noise stops, but the car still won't
start.

The buzzing noise happens for maybe 5 minutes maximum and then it
stops. After that, sometimes the car won't start, and sometimes it
will. When the car does get started, everything is normal and it is
like nothing ever happened.

I am 100% sure the battery is not the problem, because I just had it
replaced about 2 months ago and have only driven the car maybe 500
miles since.

And as a closing note, I first noticed this noise when I had to replace
the aforementioned battery. My car had died in the parking lot, and
this obnoxious buzzing sound was happening again. At this time the
battery was close to being completely dead.

If you guys can give me any advice or suggestions, It'd be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Jimmy

Hey guys,

It's me again. Let me make some corrections and additions.

1) When I close the door, the noise doesn't stop. Sorry, I must have
been hallucinating.
2) When I first try to start the car (and in subsequent attempts maybe
10 minutes later) the car looks like it's going to start for a split
second (the tachometer and all the console lights  turn on for maybe
1/2 of a second) and then it dies.
3) The noise only occurs when the key is in and is turned to the
auxilliary or ON position. It doesn't make a noise either in the off or
ignition position.

Thanks guys,

sh.t. I'm really sorry about this, but I made another mistake in my
rushed-ness.

1) The noise doesn't occur in the AUX position. It only occurs in the
OFF and ON position.

SORRY.

Thanks,
Jimmy

Sticky problem, even with all the corrections. First thing I would do
is try to locate what is making the noise. It sounds like a relay that
is not pulling in correctly.
And as far as the battery not being dead, as little as you drive the car
it sounds like the battery really does not get a chance to charge up.
If you are not driving it for any length of time, you need to put the
battery on a trickle charger everyonce in while. Your problem could
be related to an undercharged battery.

Thanks.

I played around with the car after I had posted for a while, and now
the car is definitely dead.

I tried to jump start the car multiple times--and one time I actually
got the car fired up and running. I let it run for a good while and
shut it off to try to start it again, and it hasn't started since.

It's funny--if I turn on the headlamps or any small lightbulbs inside
the car then the noise stops--so when something is drawing power from
the battery the noise doesn't occur. My thought is that the noise
continues until the charge in the battery is too low to keep the noise
up.

I've also looked more closely at the source of the noise, and it looks
like it's coming from near the fuse box (we checked fuses just in case)
near what looks like a computer port (like you would plug a computer
monitor into it).

That's as far as I will speculate.

Thanks again (and much),
Jimmy
